Disclaimer: This article is for general information only and is not investment advice. Account and KYC steps are based on Bitfinex’s public documentation at the time of writing and may change — always check the official source. We are not Bitfinex or a partner of Bitfinex. Crypto lending carries market, platform, and counterparty risk, and past performance does not guarantee future results.
Why lend on Bitfinex?
Bitfinex runs one of the largest peer-to-peer (P2P) crypto lending markets: you lend USD or USDT to leveraged traders and earn daily interest. The rate is set entirely by supply and demand — it spikes when the market is hot and falls back to a base level in quiet periods.
This guide covers everything from opening the Bitfinex homepage to a verified account that can receive funding (lending), with the steps people most often get stuck on. It reflects the flow as of early 2026; if Bitfinex changes its interface or document requirements, defer to the official documentation.
Who can open an account?
Bitfinex serves most regions, but not all. Restricted users include the United States, New York State, and UK retail users, plus sanctioned regions (e.g. Iran, North Korea, Cuba, Syria, Crimea). Always confirm against Bitfinex’s official Terms of Service for your country, since rules differ by jurisdiction (Japan and Korea, for example, have stricter local access).
One thing to be clear about up front: we are not Bitfinex and not a partner. This is a compilation of public information and our own repeated test sign-ups, to help you avoid wasted time. Whether your submission passes still depends on your document quality and Bitfinex’s risk team. The wait times and pass rates here are typical-case experience, not a promise for every reader.
What to prepare before registering
Have these ready so the process doesn’t stall:
- An email you use — ideally a dedicated finance inbox, not mixed with social/subscription mail.
- A phone — to run Google Authenticator or Authy for 2FA, and to take the biometric selfie in the Bitfinex app.
- A passport or national ID — KYC asks for two different ID documents; passport + ID is the smoothest combination.
- Proof of address — one document under three months old: utility/telecom bill, bank or credit-card statement, or government letter, with a clearly readable name and address.
- Paper and pen — to write down your 2FA backup key (the critical step below).
Tip: do the whole flow in one sitting — if the browser session expires, some steps have to be redone.
1. Basic registration (the form, field by field)
- Go to bitfinex.com. Phishing sites are everywhere — type the address yourself or reach it via search, never from a link sent by a stranger.
- Click Open Account (top right).
- Email — your prepared inbox.
- Username — your login handle; use letters and numbers, not your real name, and not one reused on other exchanges. It’s hard to change later, so choose carefully.
- Password — at least 8 characters with upper, lower, number, and symbol. We suggest 16+ generated by a password manager (1Password, Bitwarden).
- Confirm Password.
- Tick I agree to the Terms of Service and privacy policy.
- Tick the declarations (e.g. I am not a US Person) that apply to you.
- Submit, then check your email.
Bitfinex logs your registration IP. If you connect through a VPN to a restricted region (US, Canada, etc.) your account may be flagged early — complete registration and KYC on a normal local connection.
2. Email verification
- Open your inbox and find the Bitfinex email (sender usually
[email protected]). - Click Confirm Email.
- If it’s not there in 10 minutes, check spam, then click Resend.
- After confirming, you’ll be guided into 2FA setup.
Can you skip 2FA? Technically yes, but we strongly advise against it — a lending account holds real money, and no 2FA is an unlocked front door.
3. Set up 2FA (Google Authenticator strongly recommended)
Bitfinex supports Google Authenticator (TOTP) and U2F hardware keys (e.g. YubiKey). For most people we recommend Google Authenticator — no extra hardware, easier cross-device recovery if you keep the backup key, and it’s universal.
Steps
- After login, click your avatar → Security.
- In Two-Factor Authentication, click Setup next to Google Authenticator.
- A QR code appears with an Account Token (Key) below it.
- In Google Authenticator, tap “+” → “Scan a QR code” and scan it.
- The app shows a 6-digit code that rotates every 30 seconds.
- Enter the current 6 digits in the Token field and click Enable.
- Confirm via the email Bitfinex sends.
Back up the Account Token!
This is where account setup most often goes wrong. People change phones without a backup, lose the device, or delete the app — then 2FA never opens again, and the money waits weeks for manual recovery.
- Write the Account Token on paper and store it somewhere safe.
- Don’t screenshot it to your photo album or cloud (a hacked cloud account = hacked 2FA).
- Don’t email it to yourself.
- If you must keep a digital copy, encrypt it and store it offline.
After this, every login asks for a fresh 6-digit code — that’s normal.
4. KYC levels and the Intermediate requirement
Bitfinex has several verification levels. Margin funding (lending) requires Intermediate. Without it, even a registered account can’t lend.
| Level | Documents | Unlocks |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | None | Crypto spot trading |
| Basic Plus | ID, selfie | Most spot features |
| Intermediate | 2× ID, proof of address, financial questionnaire | Lending, margin, bank wires |
| Full | Above + bank statement | Full international wires |
Documents for Intermediate
- Primary ID: passport, national ID, or driver’s licence.
- Secondary ID: a different document from the list. Passport + national ID is our top pick (high resolution, fast to read).
- Proof of address (under three months): utility/gas bill, phone/internet bill, bank or credit-card statement, or a government letter.
- Biometric selfie: must be done through the official Bitfinex app — not a static web upload.
- Financial questionnaire / KYC declaration: source of funds, occupation, investment purpose, and experience.
Submission tips
- Your name’s spelling must match your passport exactly. If your other documents differ, the passport is the reference.
- Write your address in the Latin alphabet, matching your proof of address.
- Photograph documents in natural light with all four corners visible, no glare or shadow. Aim for 2MB+ files, under 10MB.
Filling the financial questionnaire without getting flagged
The questionnaire asks your occupation, income band, planned deposit size, source of funds (salary, inheritance, business, investment gains), trading experience, and PEP status. Common rejections:
- Low income but a large planned deposit (e.g. under $30k income but planning to lend $50k) gets flagged — either adjust honestly or note savings/family gift as the source.
- Source of funds set to “Other” without explanation — pick a specific option, or explain “Other” in the notes.
- 0 years experience but selecting high-risk derivatives — reads as not understanding the product; likely to need re-submission.
Honest, internally consistent answers pass fastest.
5. Review wait time
Per Bitfinex, Intermediate and Full review is usually 2–3 business days, up to about a week in busy periods. Things that drag it out: low-resolution documents, a too-dark selfie, a sloppy questionnaire (e.g. a big gap between planned deposit and stated income triggering a second review), or lots of logins/password resets during review.
Best practice: submit everything complete at once — every re-submission goes to the back of the queue.
What you can do during review
You can still log in, receive crypto deposits, and view markets. Locked until approval: funding (lending), margin trading, and fiat wires. So you can pre-position USDT/USD, but can’t lend until Intermediate goes green. If you’re short on time, back up 2FA and plan your API key permissions now, so you can connect automation the moment it clears.
6. First step after approval: lend from a sub-account
Most people, on getting “Intermediate Verified,” wire money into the main account and lend directly. We don’t recommend that.
Better flow:
- Keep the Main Account for withdrawals, KYC contact, and long-term custody.
- Create a Sub-Account dedicated to lending (e.g.
lending-01). - Generate that sub-account’s own API key with Funding read/write only; no Trading, never Withdraw. Without Withdraw, no one who gets the key can move your funds.
- Transfer the lending funds from main into the sub-account.
Why: even if the API key leaks, a hacker can’t withdraw; accounting stays clean per sub-account; and when you connect a bot (like FuNi), you only hand over that sub-account’s key while the main account stays isolated.
Creating the sub-account and key
Avatar menu → Sub-Accounts → Create Sub-Account → name it (e.g. lending-usd-01). It starts with no balance and no key — transfer funds in and generate a key inside it. For the key:
- Enable only: Funding: Read, Funding: Write, Wallets: Read, History: Read.
- Leave Trading, Withdraw, and everything else unchecked.
- Don’t enable an IP allowlist for cloud bots (including FuNi) — their egress IP can shift with load balancing and lock you out. The real safeguard is the line above: no Withdraw means a leaked key still can’t move funds.
- The Secret is shown only once — save it to your password manager immediately.
With this setup, a leaked key can at most change lending offers — it can’t withdraw or trade.
7. Troubleshooting FAQ
Q1: Not receiving the verification email? Check spam/promotions, confirm the address, and in Gmail search from:bitfinex.com. Still nothing — click “Resend confirmation.” A corporate firewall may block it; use personal Gmail or Outlook.
Q2: 2FA code always wrong? 99% a phone clock out of sync — set date/time to automatic and regenerate. If it persists, run time correction inside Google Authenticator.
Q3: Proof of address keeps getting rejected? Usually (a) older than three months, (b) name mismatch, or (c) incomplete address (missing postcode/city). A recent utility, telecom, or credit-card statement passes most reliably.
Q4: Selfie keeps failing? The biometric selfie is a liveness check — blink and turn as prompted. Failures are usually glasses glare, dim light, or an unstable upload. Daylight by a window, stable Wi-Fi, no glasses/mask/hat.
Q5: Can I deposit during review? Crypto deposits work at Basic; fiat wires need Intermediate. Test with a small USDT amount (e.g. 50 USDT) first; leave fiat until KYC clears.
Q6: Can one person open two Bitfinex accounts? Policy is one personal account per person. To isolate funds, use the sub-account mechanism above — opening a second account can trigger anti-money-laundering flags and even a freeze.
8. Conclusion and risk notes
After these steps you’ll have a lending-ready Bitfinex account. It isn’t hard; people just get stuck on proof-of-address rejections and un-backed-up 2FA. With complete documents and the 2FA key on paper, Intermediate usually clears in 2–3 days.
A few honest points:
- Crypto lending carries platform risk, borrower-default risk, and price-volatility risk — Bitfinex itself had a hack in 2016. Don’t keep all your funds on one exchange.
- Rates float with supply and demand; yield isn’t fixed, and we promise no returns.
- Lend only funds you can leave idle for a year or more — not credit, not living expenses.
- Each quarter, re-check that the API key is still funding-only and that 2FA still works, so you’re not locked out in an emergency.
Try the FuNi lending bot
Once the account and key are set, do you really want to watch rates and place offers by hand every day? That’s what FuNi is for.
- Up to 21-day free trial — no credit card; connect the API key and it runs with the APEX III engine on. The only trial-vs-paid difference is scan interval: trial 20 min, Entry 15, PRO 5, VIP 2 (accelerating to 30s on anomalies).
- Plans after trial: Entry $30/qtr, $100/yr; PRO $62/qtr, $206/yr; VIP $128/qtr, $394/yr.
You can start on the free trial, evaluate, then decide — no pressure, and you can revoke the API key at any time. Your funds stay under your control throughout.
